2010 Fellows Class Selected

Cato and Ezell Honored

Dr. James E. Cato, Teledyne Brown Engineering (TBE) Defense Systems, and Mr. Gene R. Ezell, Teledyne Solutions (TSI), have been selected as Teledyne Brown Engineering’s “Fellows” for 2010.

The Teledyne Fellows Program was established in 2004 to recognize and honor past or present employees for outstanding lifetime achievements and accomplishments in the fields of engineering and science.  The individuals are considered to be gifted, technical employees whose exceptional contributions to Teledyne helped make the company a success.  The prestigious program, which has honored 17 others prior to Cato and Ezell, maintains TBE’s heritage by creating a “Hall of Fame” of engineers and scientists.

Dr. James E. Cato
Jim Cato, Test and Verification Lead, Single Stimulation Framework, is recognized in the engineering community as having the highest degree of technical capability and was referred to as a “national treasure” for his ISTC-1 efforts by Maj. Gen. Holly.  Known as an excellent team leader, he served as Chief Integration Engineer of the Ground-based Midcourse Defense (GMD) Test Laboratories for 10 years, maintaining TBE’s prominence in the GMD system T&E program.  He was also the first to identify numerous system integration issues on the GMD program and developed TBE’s BMD virtual model used in numerous marketing efforts.  His 37-year career accomplishments at TBE include the development of the original ISTC test framework, which led to the TMDS (now known as the MDSE) spinoff, and the fundamental architecture concept and interfaces carried forward to this day in the GMD Embedded Test Framework – now the Single Stimulation Framework.  He also developed the Tactical Warning and Attack Assessment (TW/AA) radar simulations in the first end-to-end authentic representation of the United States’ TW/AA simulation.

Dr. Cato holds a B.S., M.S., and Ph.D. in electrical engineering from Texas Tech University; is a member of IEEE; and has received numerous awards from customers.

Gene R. Ezell

Gene Ezell, a senior systems analyst at TSI, joined TBE in 1965.  He is a pioneer of the Ballistic Missile Defense industry in the development of optical sensor component technology, with a 44-year career in the research and development of infrared optics and nuclear hardening of optical systems.  For 15 years, he served as Principal Technical Editor of the Sensor Hardening Handbook, a definitive reference for the US Army that documented the status of technology of all optical and related electronic components; and, in conjunction with this book, Ezell also coordinated the annual Nuclear Hardened Sensor Technology Symposia.  His efforts over the years include technology evaluation, independent analyses, test planning and evaluation, nuclear vulnerability and hardening analyses, modeling and simulation of IR detectors, signal processing, and sensor applications.

Ezell received a B.A. in physics from Vanderbilt University and an M.S. in physics from the University of Kentucky.  He has made several presentations at conferences, served on numerous panels, and published over a dozen technical papers and reports.  Ezell is a member of IEEE and was recognized as a Teledyne Associate in 2007.

Any past or present employee may nominate potential candidates for the Fellows Award.  The criteria for this award is stringent, and a nominating process is in place.  To learn more about making a nomination, contact Dr. Roy Rice at 256-726-2038 or visit the Fellows website on the intranet at http://web/fellows.  Offsite personnel may go to website https://intranet.tbe.com/fellows.
