Recipients Selected for Memorial Scholarships
Several memorial scholarships have been established in the past through the Teledyne Matching Gifts Program and donations by TBE/TSI employees and their families. Some of these scholarships have been offering financial assistance to students meeting the criteria for over 20 years. Seven students were selected to receive assistance for the 2009-2010 school year through the following memorial scholarships.
Watkins Scholarship
The Robert Hugh Watkins Memorial Scholarship was established by former TBE employees Hugh (retired, now deceased) and Kathy Watkins (formerly of Environmental Systems) in memory of their son, Robert, who was killed in a car accident the summer of 1987 following his graduation from Grissom High School (GHS). The scholarship commemorates Robert’s love for life; music; and the GHS band. The untimely death of this young man, who was a TBE Merit Student working on the Propellants, Pressurants, and Calibration contract at the time of his death, touched the hearts of many at TBE.
The scholarship, which pays for one full year’s tuition to any Alabama state-supported college or university or equivalent at another institute, was awarded to GHS senior Ray Preston. He was an outstanding trumpet player with the band and served as a section leader. He attends Auburn University, where he is continuing his musical career as a trumpet player in the AU band.
Wilbourn Scholarships
J.N. Wilbourn (retired employee, now deceased) and his wife, Joyce, established the Capt. James N. (Trey) Wilbourn III scholarships in memory of their son, who was a Marine pilot killed in action during Operation Desert Storm. The two scholarships benefit students from the schools Trey attended – Randolph High School and Auburn University.
Brian Moody, a senior at Randolph High School, received the Wilbourn scholarship for exhibiting outstanding leadership qualities in sports and community service – prerequisites for the recipient of the scholarship. He has served as captains of both the football and baseball teams and is also a member of the basketball team. Brian has been active in community services as a volunteer with the Boys and Girls Clubs, Bats and Gloves with Love, and Habitat for Humanity.
Midshipman Second Class Bryan Gibbs earned the Wilbourn scholarship to Auburn University by demonstrating such qualities as outstanding leadership, initiative, patriotism, and character. Midshipman Second Class Gibbs, from Peachtree City, GA, is a senior at Auburn majoring in criminology and holds a 3.56 GPA. A member of the Precision Drill Team Society, he was a key member of the award-winning NROTC Precision Drill Team and a team leader for the NROTC Flag Team at Auburn football games. Midshipman Second Class Gibbs, who has a strong interest in aviation, will graduate and be commissioned in May 2010.
Crews Scholarship
The Harry C. Crews Memorial Scholarship was awarded to Brett Ables of Adamsville, AL. Ables, who received $1,200 as the recipient of the scholarship, is a senior at UAH majoring in mechanical and aerospace engineering. He carries a 3.823 GPA.
Scholarship stipulations require that the student has completed 2 years of academic study at UAH, been accepted into the College of Engineering, and earned a minimum 3.2 GPA. The scholarship gives preference to co-op students, because TBE co-op students assisted Crews, an engineer, with his work after he lost his eyesight due to complications from diabetes.
Lindsay Scholarship
Ali Shirazi received the $1,000 award for the 2009-2010 academic year at UAH through the Gary S. Lindsay Memorial Scholarship. Shirazi, a resident of Madison, AL, is a sophomore majoring in computer science and holds a 3.768 GPA. He is also the recipient of the Foundation Presidential Scholarship and the Broadus and Lela Roberts Fincher Scholarship.
The Lindsay endowed scholarship, established by friends and co-workers in memory of the highly respected TBE systems engineer who died in 1986, is awarded to a UAH student who is pursuing a degree in a computer-science-related field.
Zana Scholarships
The Donald D. Zana Scholarship was renewed again for UAH junior Adam Kalachman, who is eligible to keep the scholarship through the spring of 2011. He is earning a double major in computer science and mathematics and currently boasts a 3.934 GPA. Adam, who is an honor graduate of GHS in Huntsville, is also the recipient of the UAH Platinum Award of Distinction Scholarship.
Also benefitting from the Zana Scholarship for the 2009-2010 academic year is Mallory Wilson. Mallory, who is a sophomore at UAH majoring in marketing, received a $500 award. She carries a 4.0 GPA and is from Russellville, Al. Mallory also received the Benjamin and Hazeline Graves Scholarship, the Pei Ling Chan Presidential Scholarship, the UAH Presidential Scholarship, and a Valedictorian Scholarship.
The Zana scholarship was established by friends and co-workers following the Chief Information Officer’s sudden death in 1998. It is awarded to one or more full-time UAH students based on academic merit and leadership, without restrictions as to course of study or requirement to demonstrate financial need.
