Teledyne Brown was a sponsor of the annual Alabama State Science and Engineering Fair (ASEF) hosted by The University of Alabama in Huntsville (UAH).

The Company sponsored the award of prizes to the top winners in three categories.  Teledyne Solutions employees Theresa Hartley, Jeff King, and Leslie Shepard served as Special Award judges for these categories.

Each winner received a certificate; a $100 Savings Bond; and a tour of Teledyne’s Huntsville facilities, which this year featured one of the company’s new laboratories.

Foster Perry conducted the tour.

Winners, their categories, and projects were:

Junior Division Best of Show: Katrina Hatch (Liberty Middle School, Madison) – “Experiment R”

Senior Division, Computer Science:  Nicholas Christensen (junior at Wetumpka High School, Wetumpka) – “Do You ‘Ear Wha’ I ‘Ear?”

Senior Division, Engineering:  Joel Tinker (Covenant Christian Academy, New Market) – “Heat Wave 2:  The Search for the Optimum Heat Radiator.”

Christensen also won the prestigious Director's Award at ASEF that included an $8,000 scholarship to UAH.  He went on to represent Alabama in the International Science Fair May 10-16 in Reno, Nevada, and captured second place with the same entry in the computer science category, winning $1,500.  He also received $500 and a 1-year membership from the Acoustical Society of America and $2,000 of common stock from United Technologies.  Only 20 students from Alabama attended this event that had a total of 1,500 students competing from 56 countries.

TSI employees King and Shepard have also volunteered with other Educational Outreach programs.  King has served as a technical judge for the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA) Region II Student Conference, which involved the review of full-length conference papers submitted by graduate and undergraduate students.  Shepard volunteered as a judge at the local Northwest Regional Competition of the Alabama Council for Technology in Education, where students compete in a variety of information technology, multimedia, and robotics areas.
