Clem, Quick, and Whitt Receive Outstanding Performance Awards
Harold Clem and Loyd Quick, Facilities Group, and Bobby Whitt, Manufactured Products, received Outstanding Performance Awards for the extraordinary effort they put forth to repair the Canister rolling machine at Manufacturing Plant 1. The presentation was made by TBE President Rex Geveden, assisted by Mike DeFatta, Vice President of Manufactured Products.
The machine, which is used to roll steel plate into a cylindrical form prior to welding, failed unexpectedly because the extreme pressure required for this operation led to metal and weld joint fatigue of the vertical roller built into the machine frame. Replacement of the failed hardware would have required several weeks and thousands of dollars. Our 100% on-time delivery record on the Canister program was in jeopardy as well. Clem, Quick, and Whitt devised a repair operation of the failed hardware along with a modification of the roller’s slide plate to prevent similar problems.
Their individual and joint efforts added longer life to the equipment and turned a potential 2-week shutdown, with an estimated repair cost of $25K, into a minor interruption of one day and a substantial cost savings to the company. |
